Well the hotter the water you use is always helpful in aiding you through any high pressure process, but the plain simple truth is that the only thing that cuts through road tar and oil is elbow grease.

Soaps and additives can help but once your dealing with road grime you have to at least run somekind of cloth scrubbing surface over the vehicle. I reccommend hiring some kids, they work for next to nothing and like water and cheeseburgers.
References :
There are many different models of pressure washers but without a brush you always have slight film of dirt. But if you don't mind a slight film of dirt it would cut your wash time in half or maybe less than half. I hope this helps you out.
Good luck.

Sure there are many gas-powered pressure washers and even sopme electrically operated power washers. I wouldn't recommend the electric ones, but the gas-powered pressure washers are easy to use, fast and do a good job without requiring a brush attachment (although you can buy a brush wand if you need it). Check in your nearest Home Depot, Lowes, or Sears. A good one will cost about $ 175 and up, depending upon how much usage you anticipate.

I bought one at Home Depot for $ 250 and use it all of the time; I also use it to powerwash the driveway, sidewalks, deck, house and fence. Just make sure you use the proper wash liquid for each application (there are separate types of liquid for wood, siding and cars).
